As
part of the I Love My Library’s (ILML) Campaign every year, the Library decided
to launch a new way to promote the advocacy not only to the library students
and professionals but also to the community as well. After a series of events
held for the past years to promote the campaign - Video Competition, Photo
Essay Competition, and the GivEnggLove Competition; the Library decided to do a
fund-raising activity to support a beneficiary community for this year.
The
COEXIST: Help Rebuild Libraries and Communities
Fun Run 2016 is an event geared to raise funds for the I Love My Library
Campaign Outreach Program which will support a chosen beneficiary community.
The event mainly aims to reinforce the existence of libraries and communities,
thus, it was named as COEXIST. Through this event, the Library also aimed to
further promote the advocacy of the I Love My Library Campaign. The Fun Run was
set to occur on February 14, 2016 (Sunday) at the UP Academic Oval and was open
to anyone willing to support the advocacy.
The
I Love My Library Committee was the one charged with handling the Fun Run event
along with the Information Services section which managed the promotion and
publicity of it. A Task force, with the same members as that of the ILML
Committee and with the inclusion of the Chair of the Outreach Program Committee
was formed to accomplish the event.

EVENT PROPER
The registration period was made
available for 19 days from January 18 (Monday) to February 5 (Friday). A total
of 239 participants from all walks of life participated in the Fun Run.
Representatives
from Beta Epsilon and Kambal Pandesal also came earlier to set up the food and
drinks which they brought. Some of the staff and utility workers also assisted
in the distribution of the food and drinks.
At
5:00AM, the registration of participants to confirm their attendance on the day
begun. Out of the 239 participants, 224 were present and 15 were not able to
attend the event.
Participants lined up to
confirm their attendance for the event.
The
registration period was supposed to end at 5:45AM but because of the continuous
arrival of participants at that time, it was extended until 5:55AM. The warm
up, led by two library staff, Mr. Marvin Factor and Ms. Krystalle Rome Peralta,
followed.
A warm up was done to
prepare the participants before the actual run.
After
the warm up, the participants of the 4.4K distance category were told to
assemble in front of the race mark. The colors of the rubber bands to be picked
up from each station were also announced. The gun start of the 4.4K run started
at 6:10AM, ten minutes later than its supposed schedule. Mr. Ronilo Salustiano
marked the start of the race with a 10-second countdown and by blowing a
whistle. The same was done for the 2.2K distance category which started at
6:15AM, also ten minutes later than its supposed schedule.
Participants assembled at
the race mark (left) and participants on the run (right)
Staff
with a videocamera were also placed near the race mark to record the arrival of
the participants. The top finishers were spotted as well as the winners of the
special prizes.
The
awarding followed shortly after all the participants have finished their run.
Winners were called to receive their prizes at the Melchor Hall steps. The
prizes were handed to the winners by the Head Librarian, Ms. Sharon Maria
Esposo-Betan.
The following participants were the top three finishers for
each distance category.
